Metsovo

Metsovo is located on a mountainside of Pindos and it is a mountainous town of the county of Ioannina at an altitude of 1,160 m. It is located 150 km from Thessaloniki (about 1 hour and 45 minutes). It has a population of 3195 inhabitants (mainly Vlach) who are engaged in mainly in farming, in agriculture and in various folk arts such as weaving. Metsovo is one of the most picturesque towns in Greece. The traditions remain alive as it has mansions, cobbled streets, interesting museums and cultural centers. If you visit it you will meet old ladies with the traditional dresses and you will feel like you travel back in time.

What to do in Metsovo:

Visit the ski area: In winter, Metsovo has an organized ski center which attracts many visitors. It is the newest ski center in the country. There, you can do ski and other activities, and as well as you will have the opportunity to enjoy hot drinks and the amazing view.
See the sights of Metsovo: The unchanged in time traditional architecture of Metsovo will enchant you. Wander the narrow streets and see majestic mansions like the mansion of Tositsa which is a folklore museum inside. Furthermore you will see great churches such as the Monastery of the Assumption, and Agia Paraskeyh which is the cathedral of the town. Finally do not forget to visit the Gallery of Evangelos Averoff, the Averoff Garden and the watermill of Gina on the River Arachthos.
Admire the lake of Aoos: The artificial lake of Aoos is one of the most beautiful spots throughout the region and an important wetland which attracts many visitors every year. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a walk around it.
Try traditional products and dishes: Metsovo is famous both for its wine and for its dairy products (Metsovone and metsovela). If you are in this town, don’t forget to try them and if you want to buy them with other traditional products and folk art from the many souvenir shops. Also visit the small traditional tavernas in the area and taste dishes with local meat, bean soup, vegetables and more.
