The monastery was built in 980 by Ioannis Tornikios the Iberian and it is one of the largest monasteries of Mount. The main church dates back to the 10th century and it has two other remarkable chapels ,Portaitissa Virgin and the Baptist. The monastery is celebrated on August 15.
The most important relic founded there, is the miraculous icon of the “Virgin Portaitissa”. Moreover, it has an important library with many manuscripts and approximately 15,000 printed texts.
